Theme Division entries for Ironstone's 15th Annual Spring Obsession Art Show have been selected and will be arriving this weekend. Although the exhibit doesn't open until March 3rd, the selection of the winner of the Theme Division has to happen quite early to ensure the winning poster makes its appearance at the Artist Reception/Food Wine Pairing event, Saturday afternoon, March 3rd.

This weekend is a big weekend for us here at Ironstone. All the accepted Theme Division paintings will be arriving, hand delivered by the artists themselves.

We are promised a clear crisp sunny day here in the foothills. No better time to deliver these outstanding paintings providing a wonderful weekend day trip or for some an even better weekend get away. I have received notice from at least one artist that is planning on taking advantage of the weather to set up an easel for a day of relaxed plein air painting somewhere on Ironstone's beautiful grounds.

Make a visit yourself to possibly meet some of the artists in the Tasting Room or search out those that might be painting out and about.

OPEN Division entries are due Friday, Feb. 3rd. That is just around the corner, so don't waist any more time! It is a wonderful opportunity to get your name & paintings out in front of the buying customers. You may download the entry forms from the blog (see page above) or you may email

Even more amazing is the fact that all of the mountain passes are open! Big Trees State Park is stunning in the sunshine with no snow on the ground and none in the forcast. Bear Valley is beautiful too and only 45 minutes up the hill..

Yes, we do need the water, but get out there and enjoy what is, the rain is sure to come ... Get out of the fog and enjoy the sunshine! Come on up to Murphys!

Mr. Boots Update

Thank you so much from all our wonderful "Winery Pet Fans"! Your caring inquiries into Boots, Mia, Duke & the nameless one's well being are always appreciated. You are the reason they love coming to work...

Today's update is for those of you who have been asking about Mr. Boots. Mr. Boots was retired from the winery last year due to one too many run-ins with neighboring feral cats. He was a perfect tour guide, lap warmer and all around great feline that deserved a comfortable retirement. Mr. Boots spent many an hour stretched out on the red velvet cushions of the 1800's love seat here in the Heritage Museum accepting all caresses that came his way. Here is a reminder of those past lazy days....

Mr. Boots has been retired to a private, full service facility here in Calaveras County where he spends his days in full comfort. He has access to the wild outdoors, but elects to remain inside in the comforts afforded to the very special in our lives.

Mr. Boots spends most of his hours in the comfort of his own bed with only the finest feather down pillows, flannel bedding * full down comforter for those chilly winter evenings ....

Upon rising in the later hours of the morning, Mr. Boots keeps himself in fine shape with regular stretching exercises with his personal trainer...

We here at Ironstone send Mr. Boots our best, we miss him dearly but know he is happy in his new home. We will most certainly share any updates on Mr. Boots should he find the time to send us additional photos and news.

Celebrating its 15th Anniversary this year, The Spring Obsession is a glorious entity in and of itself. An event that has grown and matured along side the many talented artists that have made The Spring Obsession such a fun and wonderful event. Through the years, we have had the pleasure of watching The Spring Obsession artists grow, finding their niche and sucesses in the wide world of art.

In striking visual glory, inspiration for the canvas, The Spring Obsession also welcomes Ironstone's brilliant Daffodil & Tulip presentation. Master Gardner Larry Ringland brings forth that special weekend almost 600 half barrels of full color and delight. With over 22 tons of daffodils planted throughout the grounds and into this barrel program, The Spring Obsession weekend is breathtaking. A must see for everyone.

Team work prevails as the Ironstone Team tries to outdo the previous year's team in the decor of the Saturday afternoon's Artist Reception. From indoor garden parties to koi ponds to Obsession Wine trees, you never know what is in store!

Our in house showman, Executive Chef James is always the hit with his Cooking Demonstrations on Spring Obsession Saturday. Then again with his many food and wine pairing stations at the Gala Artist Reception that Saturday afternoon.

You see him here at last years Oyster Station with Champagne no less!

Vineyard Update from Winemaker Steve Millier

Out in the vineyard last week, Steve Millier, Ironstone's winemaker, was photographed checking the Chardonnay that will go into our Ironstone Reserve Chardonnay program. Looking good too!

On Monday October 3rd, we brought in our Sierra Foothills Estate Grown Viognier. The Viognier came in at 25 brix will go into our Reserve program. The flavors were wonderful and we are very pleased with the grapes.

Tuesday, Oct 4th, we picked our Sierra Foothills Estate Grown Chardonnay. Going into press the Chardonnay was at 24.2 brix and was showing intense flavors. This was a relief to get these grapes in before the midweek rain, which caused us a delay in harvest. We had possibly an inch of rain, but the soils in Murphys tend to dry quickly.

We picked our Muscat Canelli on October 7 & 8 ... stay tuned for more as the season progresses...

Yes, they all come together on November 5th here at Ironstone Vineyards for the 4th Annual Winegrape & Gourmet. Hosted by the Calaveras Winegrape Alliance, this winelovers afternoon features the Sierra Foothills’ top chefs preparing signature dishes which are paired exclusively with a wine selection from an award-winning Calaveras winery. It can't be more fun munching and sipping all afternoon!

This truely is a great friends get away event. Relaxing, fun and if you want, educational... yes, you can even learn a bit if you need to justify the afternnoon! Some of our newer dining establishments will be here to show off their chefs along with our old favorites...

CALL TO ARTISTS * Plain Air painting opportunity, on site Saturday, Sept. 24th. as a part of the Concours d'Elegance.

NO entry fee, no sales fees & a free lunch. Now what could be more fun! This is a fantastic opportunity to capture those rare and fun autos of other eras, all in one location. Over 300 classic cars represented as well as classic boats, tear drop trailers and historic motorcycles. And if that weren't enough, costumes galore, 4-H animals and the stunning Ironstone Vineyards Gardens.

The Concours Foundation is a non profit organization raising funds for the California 4-H scholarship funds and the California State Faire Scholarship funds. In addition to the entry fee, funds are also raised through the live auction. Through the years, fine donated paintings have lead the bidding and helped the foundation meet their goals. Wine Down the Middle, Fork of the Salmon that is....

Ironstone joins OARS for a great white water rafting trip down the middle fork of the Salmon River in Idaho Aug. 27th. Considered one of the continent’s primo rafting destinations, this Middle Fork trip takes you through what are touted as legendary rafting waters. I can attest to the beauty of the high country forests, granite canyons & precious grassland having had the pleasure of representing Ironstone on this same voyage several years ago.

The food is always outstanding on these trips, but the special treat on the wine trip is our very own Chef James will be on the waters with the group, cooking up a storm at every evening camp. Paired with the foods, Chris Foppiano will be pouring select Ironstone wines to the happy crowd. Now, challenging the waters isn't the only fun that goes on with these trips... take a look at the photos of "dress up" night.

Now, OARS didn't do that on my trip! Can't wait to see what Chef James brings back!

Update! We had a great day with Robert drooling all over the newest Moorcroft designs. He also brought one of Britains leading photo mags with full photo coverage of the royal wedding. Some great photos not seen by any of us. Word has it that the Royal Wedding commemorative Moorcroft vase has been one of the best selling pieces in Moorcroft's history. It is a beautiful piece. For those collectors that were unable to attend, touch base with us here in the Museum for your copy of the 2011 catalogue.

Moorcroft's Robert Townsend will be joining us here in the Heritage Museum on Wednesday, May 11th from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm. Stop by for complimentary refreshments and an opportunity to see Moorcroft's newest designs and special limited editions. Robert will be here to answer your questions and explain the inspirations of the newest pieces.

We have always enjoyed Robert's visits. It is much like Christmas as he slowly opens his huge travel case and gently unwraps each treasure, one by one. It has been actually breathtaking as the wrapping comes off. Moorcroft catalogues, as hard as they try, do not do justice to the vivid colors or artistic details of these stunning pieces of art pottery. They are a must see.

We will be offering a 15% discount on any prepaid orders on new designs made with Robert on that Wednesday as well as a 20% savings on the limited edition Obsession piece while supply lasts, pictured above. Coming in this morning I couldn't believe my eyes! The parking lots were full with overflow lots near so. I would say this years Health Fair was quite the success. The earlybirds were here for the blood tests. That required fasting 24 hours so the earlier they were here the sooner they could have breakfast! Kudos to Mark Twain for another successful event. Despite the threat of wind rain and possibly snow, the Calaveras County Garden Club is here today in full force getting ready for their "March Melody", A Flower Show, that is on display this Saturday and Sunday along with the Northern California Daffodil Society Show & Competition. Competition is always tough but full of fun, friendships and creativity to boot. These gals are having way too much fun out there!

Ironstone Vineyards wishes to thank Exec. Vice Pres., Academy of Art University, San Francisco, Melissa Marshal and Drawing Instructor, Academy of Art University, SF Craig Marshall for their valued assistance in selecting this years Open Division Winners. With 101 paintings of all media and subject matter, it was no easy task. The selection process took a great deal of time to afford careful thought, review and collaboration between the two. I can attest from past exhibits, this isn't always easy and can take much of an afternoon.

All in all, the choices were well received. Both Melissa and Craig made themselves available at the reception for all attending artists to grill for information and observations on their works and styles. I have always appreciated access to judges for input on my works as a learning and growing opportunity.

Again, thank you Melissa & Craig for a wonderful job...

Ironstone Vineyards Tasting Room will be hosting the Writers Unlimited and Manzanita Writers Press Group of Authors. Great opportunity to meet the authors first hand, discuss their inspirations and purchase your very own signed copy! Come say hello!

Jim Lanier--A Murphys area resident, Jim is a member of Writers Unlimited of San Andreas and his first book, The Bizzare Bazzar, is full of stories that you might find... well, a bit bizarre, but very entertaining nonetheless. A singer, song writer and guitarist, he also hosts Open Mic every Saturday night at the Mercantile in Angels Camp.

Kimberly Norton--I live in Columbia and will be promoting my book The Crystal Princess at Ironstone. The Crystal Princess is the first fictional book in a series of new books I'm writing. The book age range of 13 and up. The story is full of twists and turns. It's about a witch named Kelly who meets up with a Mi Wuk Indian named Max( White Bear). It's got love suspense and so on.

Ted Laskin--An attorney from Arnold with a law office in Angels Camp, Ted has lived in the area for years. This, his first book, was published by our Manzanita Writers Press and is full of some amusing, some serious, stories about Custer, horse racing, Jessie Owens, Mules, and lawyers, although somewhat incomplete. It's a 'must read'.

Stephen Holmes--Another member of Writers Unlimited, Steve's Zook is an adventure tale from the future. There has been a cataclysm that has destroyed civilization. Zook is a descendant of some survivors who live in what was the area of Los Angeles. He sets out to explore, and travels to the area where San Francisco once thrived. Fascinating!

Kathy Boyd Fellure -- a resident of Ione, has founded a very successful writing group there. She is the author of several wonderful, beautifully illustrated children's books, which she will present at Ironstone. Kathy also has a novel based on her fond memories of summers at Lake Tahoe which is ready for publication.

Monika Rose -- founder of Writers Unlimited (1984) and Manzanita Writers Press, lives in Mountain Ranch. In addition to creating a venue where authors can meet to discuss writing and critique each other's work, she teaches High School English in Lodi. Monika has shepherded six volumes of Manzanita: Poetry and Prose of the Mother Lode and Sierra into print, and has recently completed her first book of poetry, River by the Glass, which will be out this summer.

Glenn Wasson -- A retired Air Force Pilot who served in Viet Nam, Glenn is a master speaker and storyteller. He is well known in this area for his impersonations of the doggerel-writing bank robber Black Bart, and Glenn has written volumes of doggerel of his own, some of which you'll find along with some short stories in his hilarious book, Stories Mark Twain Would Have Loved to Steal, a new, expanded version of which has just been published and will be available this weekend at Ironstone.

Antoinette May -- member of Writers Unlimited, is a columnist, travel writer and historical novelist who has been on the New York Times Best Seller List. She is currently working on her third novel, the story of Mary Shelley, the woman who created Frankenstein. She will be presenting her first two novels, Pilate's Wife and The Sacred Well, at Ironstone this weekend.

It's official! The 2011 Theme Division of Ironstone's 14th Annual Spring Obsession Art Show is spectacular! The entries are in and originals beginning to arrive. I love this time of year! Love the art, love the artists and love the excitment building for the big weekend March 5 & 6. If you have not participated or come out to see this event, you really must give it a shot! The artists are here with art in action, presentations and so much more... Watercolorist Carolyn Macpherson will be giving a presentation on "pouring a watercolor background" at 10:30 AM on Sunday, March 6th. . For those of you not familiar with watercolors, this is a difficult but beautiful effect to achieve with this tempermental medium. Carolyn is a master. Kathy B's workshop has been as busy as Santa's! Creating her masterpieces just for you and yours. Each basket is created with a specific theme in mind and clearly captures Kathy's inspiration. This is just a small sampling of Linda Abernathy's work. Stunning and detailed, it is amazing just watching her work those tiny beads. I've put a slide show to the right. It is well worth the time to stop and look. Even more so to come by and see her live. As well as a very talented lady, Linda is also one of the most charming artists you will ever meet. Hailing from the Bay Area, Linda has family throughout the Gold Country which is how we are graced with her company here at Ironstone's Heritage Museum. We really love her visits.

If you are a designer or just getting started with beadwork, come by and Linda will provide you with great pointers and suggestions on techniques and tools of the trade. She has been doing this longer than the current beading fad began. As a floral designer in one of her past lives, Linda if full of creativity. Ever visit she delights us with a new fresh flower arrangement that is worth the stop itself!

Sounds of the Season

Tis that time of year again! "Sounds of the Season - A Family Affair" is back at Ironstone November 27th. This years theme is a Country Family Get together. I had the pleasure of participating last year with the Cowboy Country Theme. What a fun evening! Sounds of the Season is a live show, family oriented with no limit to join in and sing along if you like. It truly is an event you can take the whole family to. We had little ones dancing to the songs up front with the musicans last year. They were so cute and having so much fun! After the show is a wonderful supper. Ironstone does require reservations so Chef James prepares enough food! So do make your reservations now, 209-728-1251 ext. 11. Adults are $35. 12 & Under, $25 for both the show and supper! It is a wonderful way to get into the warm and fuzzy family holiday spirit, have a great meal and a good time as well. Join us!

Up and Running! Pottery & Jewelry Oh My!

Up and running! Didn't take June long to put together a beautiful display of her pottery and jewelry. June & Bill Vaughn potter is a must see. Come by and take a look before they all find new homes!

On a more serious note, I was able to model one of the jewelry pieces on Wednesday. The attention it drew was almost embarrasing. I was first drawn to June's pottery as I mentioned in an earlier post, but, wearing this piece of jewelry and wearable art raised my level of awareness to the complexity of their designs beyond the pottery. As I showed the details and explained the craftsmanship to our Museum guests, the piece began to take on a life of its own. Complex, stunning and extremely artful, I ended up naming the piece as if it were quite alive. And it was for me for that time I had the honor of wearing it. It was like a partnership between us. I became a vehicle for the piece to move and live as it was intended to. Wierd? Maybe, maybe not. You must be the judge.

OK, I have regressed! Back to my discovery, June Vaughn. Aside from being one of the most charming people I have met in a while, June is talented. Very talented. A local artist hailing from Sonora, June and her husband Bill have never exhibited locally, or at least not much. Focused on the larger more predectable art markets like Camel, this is a treat for us to have them at Ironstone. Their own back yard, so to speak. The piece that drew me to June's booth was a stunning platter, off white with wild black lines weaving in and out, sharp and fuzzy, so much like the manner in which I like to doodle. Yes, we all do don't we? Anyway, in speaking to June, these interesting black lines were accomplished by using horse hairs during the firing. Yes, just like the ones we ride up here in Murphys. We love them! And this pottery just brings it all home. And yes, the design work is so intricate it captivates you for such a long time... had to see more! And that brings us to these photos of June setting up her work here at Ironstone Heritage Museum for all to see and enjoy.

"The Vaughn's ceramic work has transcended more than four decades. The heart and soul of the art arises from the crucial role that both husband and wife play in the formation of the pieces, with Bill throwing inventive shapes and June carving and decorating in a tribal art-influenced style. Their work also incorporates mixed media including stones, shells, metal, feathers, and found objects. Over the years, their style has evolved from functional stonework to one-of-a-kind high art designs, and is currently collected internationally. Each final piece is the perfect union of two creative minds."

Independence Hall Quilters Oct. 22, 23 & 24 @ Ironstone

This weekend Ironstone Vineyards is delighted to have back with us the Independence Hall Quilters. Labeled the Mountain Heirloom Quilt Faire XXXIII, this talented group of ladies have taken over Ironstone's large Alhambra Music Room and filled it with quilts, wall hangings, wearable art, dolls, needle art and more. There are several stunning club quilts available for sale for only $450.00 each as well as a quilt titled "Mountain Home" available all as a raffle prize. Elsewhere throughout the facility are vendors offering anything and everything one can image that relates to quilts, quiltmaking and more. There is a boutique, demonstrations, door prizes, a country store and vendor booths.

Now, our favorite booth is just downstairs where you can buy a delightful antique plate or cup & saucer brimmed full of home made cookies and treats! And you get to keep the plate to fill again and pass along for the holidays. I am amazed at the number of guests have already arrived to shop and seek out their favorite quilts on display. Actually we have met people today from all over the US. Can't wait until tomorrow!

Watercolor by Artist Shona Macomber

In celebration of this weekend's Mountain Heirloom Quilt Faire XXXIII, Artist Shona Macomber brings us a beautiful watercolor titled "Patches of Memories". Forgive my little camera and its light reflections, but I just had to show you how special this piece is. Shona is a very talented watercolorist who paints for the love of the process. In Shona's words: "I paint because I love Process. Growing gardens from seed, breathing new life into living spaces, watching seasons change. Life is learning, growth, and renewal through process. My paintings illustrate this journey, much of the time in a whimsical way. No matter how difficult, or dark, or even hopeless a life-experience may appear to be, its touch can work good, even bring beauty. I am at peace. I usually choose watercolor to share my observations. Painting in watercolor is a process in itself, following the flow of fluid pigment on paper, using tight control or giving it freedonw bloom. As you may guess, it is the letting go og control that seems to bring the most fulfillment and resulting beauty. I have benefited from the watercolor instruction of Vernon Nye and Judi Betts. A lifetime of study, teaching, and practive have taught me to paint; the Creator God has taught me to see."

Mark Twain Festival / Mark Twain Autobiography

A most outstanding weekend... The 2010 Mark Twain's Motherlode Festival. Kicking off the event was the production of "Sam & Laura" by the Best Selling author, Ron Powers at the Bret Harte Theater Friday night.
I attended the Mark Twain Symposium Saturday morning at Camps at Greenhorn Creek. MC'd by the Calaveras Enterprise's editor, Ralph Alldredge, this line up of Mark Twain scholars was eye opening. Listening to each as they described their journey of discovery of just who was this man, Mark Twain, it slowly dawned on me that I had never really focused or put into my own perspective just what a phenomenon Mark Twain truly is. Irreverent, outspoken, fearless and willing to take on every social & political taboo of the times. Opinionated yet willing to challenge his own observations, Mark Twain is timeless, even today.

The sold out room laughed, sighed and applauded as each of the Twain Experts discussed the challenges they each faced as they worked through the endless manuscripts, letters and documents left by Mark Twain as attempts to piece together his own autobiography in exactly the manner Mark Twain intended. A monumental challenge in and of itself.

On to the Gala Dinner, with keynote speaker Ron Powers, the Pulitzer Prize and Emmy Award winning author of "Mark Twain, a life" and co-author of "Flags of our Father", both New York Times Bestsellers. Later in the evening, the very first presentation of the Mark Twain Award for contributions to the Journalism and literature of California by Will Fleet, President of the California Press Association to its first recipient, of course, Samuel Clemens. A grand night for all attendees.

Proceeds from this event will be used to benefit the Angels Camp Museum and to establish the Mark Twain Festival as an annual literary event for the entire Mother Lode region. Caroline Schirato as executive director led the Steering Committee with chair Bob Trinchero on a path of outstanding execution down to the smallest detail. Kudos to all the sponsors, volunteers, committee members and others who assisted to produce this great event.

As I saw it, the focal point of this event was Mark Twain's Autobiography. Mark Twain stipulated that his autobiography could not be published until 100 years after his death. And, here we are, 100 years later. I wonder if his statement meant Mark Twain did not realize the importance of his own contribution to American Writing. Did he perhaps not expect anyone would take up this challenge? So here it is, 100 years after his death and Volumn one is on the table!

I have started reading this huge book. A treat to have access before the actual release date. True to Mark Twain, it doesn't follow chronological order as most biographys do, it is a series of stories in his own style, wandering from here to there, but, painting a beautiful picture of a man we have all grown to love. I think I might even post some of my observations as I traverse his written word. The book looks daunting, but, I love Mark Twain's animated style of writing and his keen observations. Humor, he makes me laugh. Mark Twain can look at an everyday event and see a totally different side than I would ever expect. He makes me laugh and he makes me sad. I will keep you posted on my progress.

Cleverwolf Entertainment on location

We had a great visit from CleverWolf Entertainment Tuesday for filiming of the Crystalline Gold specimen as well as some of our more interesting natural nuggets. Jeremy Maupin, director is seen in the photo at the right, adjusting the big cameras for a nice shot or Ironstone's Crystalline Gold Specimen. The shoot was done for the Living Well network, CBS Southern California. Not sure if we will see it when it comes out in January up North, but, hoping to get a video on line that we can share with you.

It is hard to believe that the Summer Concert Series is over, fall is here and the perspectus for the Spring Obsession Art Show is ready to go out to our great and talented artists!

I have to admit, this is one of my favorite events here at Ironstone. The annual Spring Obsession Art Show, Sale & Competition.....

Going into our 14th year, this exhibit draws art work from around the US and Canada. We have had inquiries from Italy, Spain and Brazil as well, although shipping paintings overseas has always seemed to be a bit of a setback to some of the artists abroad.

The Spring Obsession event originally began as a celebration of Ironstone's best selling wine, "Obsession", made from the Symphony grape developed at UC Davis by Dr. Olmo back in the mid 40's. This wine is has always been a fun and unique wine with a very broad appeal. Close your eyes as you inhale it's powerful floral bouquet. You think you are standing in the bouchard gardens in spring time. So rich, sweet and with the smell of all the flowers in our gardens here at Ironstone. Next, the first sip has a gentle sweetness that can take off the edge of any spicy or hot dish you can pair it with. Just a bit though, not thick sweet, just easy and delicious. Add to that a complexity not expected in this little wine, a delightful lingering dry finish and you have a wine for all occassions.

One ton of daffodil bulbs

Well, we thought this wonderful little wine needed a special occassion to celebrate. In our ponderings, on where, how & why, we discovered that not only was there a daffodil called "Symphony", but, there was also a daffodil named "Obsession"! And, if you haven't heard already, Ironstone Vineyards has planted over 20 tons, yes tons! of daffodil bulbs throughout the grounds and in half barrels.

What a perfect match! With a daffodil on the label, a celebration of Obsession Wine, Great Art and Mother Nature's show of Blooming Spring Daffodils, an event was born!

We have had such fun ever since! Spinning in and out of our Spring Obsession weekend are our friends from the Northern California Daffodil Society and our Murphys Irish Day Celebration. The Northern California Daffodil Society moved their annual spring daffodil show and competition to Ironstone over 14 years ago and draw to their show daffodil and flower experts from around the world each spring! While downtown Murphys, Irish Days begins with a street fair and a true celebration of Murphy's Irish influence from the Gold Mining Era. This event too has gained such popularity far beyond just a regional event.

In the early years, we all partied together on the same wild and crazy weekend, with shuttle busses running loop after loop from Ironstone to downtown and back again until poor little charming Murphys was so overwhelmed we hit gridlock!

Spread the love! The Spring Obsession Art show moved to the first weekend of March not only to releave the body crush downtown, but also to coincide with daffodil bloom which we saw was coming a bit earlier as the years past, leaving Murphys Irish Days & the Northern California Daffodil Days to party hearty on the 3rd weekend of March.

So now begins the Spring Obsession! For us the event begins now, getting the word out to artists around the country, lining up the judges, new daffodil bulbs going into the ground for a more spectacular Spring Bloom, and Ironstone's Executive Chef James working on new pairings with Obsession wine and his spectacular foods! Doesnt' get better than that!

So mark your calendars for March 5 & 6, 2011! Artists, Theme division entries due January 7th, 2011, so time to join us in the preparations for Spring Obsession 2011

Artist Diana Eppler's work on display now thru Nov. 17

Ironstone's Galleria is celebrating a new art exhibit of paintings by artist Diana Eppler. Diana's work will be on display in our main Galleria, just below the tasting room, Wednesday through Sundays from 10 to 5.

As Diana explains...

“The foothills are a wonderful area for artists. The landscape choices are endless and all within a morning’s drive. My painting subjects are varied as that is my nature. I will probably be perpetually in some period of transition with my art which, I hope, is a good thing. I try to work towards a melding of classical, contemporary and my own style; always striving to share with the viewer a means of expression which is representational without being literal or prosaic.

I used to worry where was I going with my art? Was I a colorist, tonalist, impressionist, plein air or studio painter? I now know my art leads me. Each piece is individual and dictates how it should be painted. First comes what I feel, then what I see.

When I paint is is me and it is my own. An idea for painting frequently comes from my emotional response to color and light. I build around that, often changing the subject matter partly or entirely until the color, light, movement and design meet to fit the mood. This manner of creating a painting works well for the studio, which I very much enjoy, however, painting en plein air (outdoors in one sitting) is a good way to rejuvenate the very feeling that create the moods. You hear and smell the water, wind and grass storing away those sensations to conjure up later. The instant gratification and capturing the moment in a couple of hours is a great way for me to loosen up.”

Born in Amador County, Diana lived at Lake Tahoe and in Nevada, Southern and Northern California before returning to the foothills in 1997. She and her husband now reside in Jamestown. Although always drawing and painting from childhood, she never had an art class. In later years she attended Western Nevada Community College and studied with Wellington Smith, noted artist, lecturer and teacher. Workshops over the years included Janet Tarjan Earl, Edgardo Garcia, Jeanette LeGrue, Kathleen Dunphy and Charles Waldman although she considers herself, basically, self taught. Past Board of Director of the Siskiyou Art Assoc., Creative Arts Guild and Mother Lode Art Assoc. Past member of the Lithia Artists Assoc., Central Sierra Arts Council and Central Calif. Art Assoc. Founding member of the Post and Aloft Art Galleries, Sonora and currently Display Director of the Aloft Art Gallery.

Mark Twain Motherlode Festival

Sam Clemmons was one of our more famous residents during those wild and crazy gold rush days. For a momentous 3 months, he lived just outside of Angels Camp on Jackass Hill. His home, called the Mark Twain Cabin, or a replica of such, still stands. It was actually owned by the Gillis family who were happy to provide Sam Clemmens with a place to stay and company to boot. Not much to see, but, in those days, he had a roof over his head and a stove to keep his hands warm while he wrote with plenty of company to enjoy life with.

This year celebrates the 100th anniversary of his death with a fantastic weekend of events at the Angels Camp Museum, Bret Harte Theater and under the big top at Greenhorn Creek.

Concours d'Elegance 2010

What an exciting day Saturday was. Mind you, I am not all that much of a big auto fanatic other than for transportation and hauling. Go figure, I drive a truck. But, Saturday actually proved to be an exciting day. Looking at all those cars, trucks, boats & cycles brought back such great memories of years past. Camping trips as a kid with an old falcon with a matching trailer, the two restored Model A's my dad drove us around in the rumble seat, the mustang convertable I drove through High School until Dad realized how valuable it was... still in the family, too...

Car club trips, gathering at a friends or family homes to admire the new vehicle, yeah I even remember someone with an Edsel! Family members attempting to restore an old Chris Craft, succeeding later in life with a historic motorcycle... guess you really don't have to be a classic car fanatic to really enjoy a classic car show. I certainly did and on so many different levels.

This year too brought out 11 outstanding Plein Aire Artists that painted throughout the facility during the show. They had soo much to chose from, some focused on a single scene throughout the day, while others would sketch or paint a while, then move on to another area and more opportunities. They were all enjoying the crowds as much as the crowds seem to enjoy them. Lots of questions, commendations and a few sales as well. You can see their biographies below..

Again this year, Ironstone's Volunteer Team came through for the Concours Foundation with flying colors. All prompt, friendly and more than helpful to all the guests attending this year. I can't say enough in praise for this wonderful and fun group of people. Why, one of our volunteer couples were even Best of Class winners with their flashy looking classic jag. Very hot & sleek looking machine that one! Kudos to them all!

Artists painting on site Saturday...a Must see!

I must say, having such great plein aire artists painting on site for the Concours d'Elegance Saturday is such a joy and long time coming. This is the first year artists have been invited to participate. I was able to hang completed paintings in the Galleria that will be on display through Tuesday, October 5th. So do take the time to come by and check out some spectacular paintings! I have listed each artists biography to the right. So do take a look and see who all is joining us... love to see you here. The Concours is such a great charity event too!

Plein Aire Painters at Ironstone this Saturday!

The Ironstone Concours d'Elegance has added a new treat this year. Eleven Plain Aire artists will be on site all day Saturday, Sept. 25th. painting the elegant classic autos, motorcycles, boats, 50's tear drop trailers, Shady Ladies in costume as well as the 4-H projects and animals. This marks the first year artists have been invited on site during the event itself. Long time coming if you ask me!

Friday, we will be hanging representative art from the participant painters in the Ironstone Gallerias where they will remain on display for the following week. These pieces will be available for sale as well, with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the Foundation's great works with the California 4-H scholarship foundation, the FFA scholarship fund and the California State Fair Scholarship fund. All great causes to support our young people.

"Pissarro in the Field"

The second of the two Spalt Guitars is named "Pissarro in the Field". Breathtaking piece, in the words of Artist Paul Schmidt...

"Lucien Pissarro, son of Camile Pissarro - well known French impressionst painter often called the "father of impressionism" began as a painter but during the 1880's became enthusiastic about woodcuts and wood engravings. (Embedded in the redwood burl of this outstanding electric guitar) this five - color woodcut from 1897 (catalogued in Fern - #92) was entitled variously "In the Field" or "Gold Cloud". The poetry of this astounding print spoken through its language of colours and composition thrilled me immediately upon viewing it. The gold was reminiscent of Tiffany, and the muted glow was consistent with so many of the other works of art l'd selected. Mango, koa, walnut, redwood burl, poplar, and Macassar ebony (bridge) comprise the woods selected to enliven this instrument, along with the silver, pearl, abalone, Catalin knobs and bone switch. The son-gold yellow orange pickups mirror the character of the lithograph, which weds golds, greens, blues, yellows and browns to form its disposition. The pearl inlay shaped into gynkgo leaves-inspired-kites sweeps through the body and into the neck for a graceful and strident theme that compliments the stirring quietude of the art. Bountiful, bold, gentle, and startling in its beauty."

Electrifying Electric Guitars!

"Mucha Summer" by Michael Spalt

Wow, all I can say about this incredable piece of art. I am not a guitar player, but you don't have to be to appreciate these beauties, two of which are here on display in Ironstone's Heritage Museum for an undisclosed period of time.

One of 13 from Michael's "The Nouveau Series Guitars", "Mucha Summer" focuses on the original Mucha "Summer" lithograph which is suspended over gold-leaf and festooned with pearl. This guitar features mother-of-pearl and abalone cat tails flowing through the figured Brazilian rosewood. A stylized dragonfly lights on the Indian rosewood pahntom soundhole with its translucent wings revealing the abalone cat-tail stem beneath. The glass exhibits a moonlit soft rainbow of strong orange, purple, blue, green, pink, yellow, amber - all luminescent huse floating over the gold-leaf, inspired by the lithograph both in actual colour and mood of the peaceful-warmed summer moment. The earthiness of the Brazilian rosewood is reflected in the colour of the bridge pickup while the water motil is captured by the glass and the blue neck pickup. The Catalin knobs and resin switch are set in myrtle burl neighboring the Macassar ebony bridge.

These are must see to believe masterpieces.. and the sound spectacular as well!

Last days of May... Lots of new beginnings

Finally after much planning, Ironstone's Heritage Museum WWII exhibit is Open! Titled, WWII A Small Window, this exhibit portrays small windows into WWII. Weapons used, treasures carried, what they wore and what they thought, just small windows into WWII. This exhibit will run through August. Check out the slide show to the right.

Also opening this last week, Our Main Galleria presents the surrealist paintings of Melinda Englebrecht. These very powerful and emotional paintings represent the beauty of the odd juxtapositions to every life and every happening. Stop by if you have an opportunity. These paintings are very beautiful.

Passport weekend was a beautiful weekend with passport holders catching the Gold Fever, panning with Mario on the creek. Need I say more!

We are now gearing up for our first concert June 6th. Volunteers will be contacted next week with assignments and all are ready to rock and roll! Are you? Check out the bands on their official websites just to the right of this column. I heard a few new ones myself! What a Great Concert Season this year! Hope to see you all here. Museum Update!

Spring Art show coming down next week. Sad days at Ironstone. The walls always look so forlorn the weeks after Spring Show goes away. If you have not seen the show yet, time is running out!

Currently the 2010 Galleria schedule is in the planning stages and will be released upon complete confirmation of all artists. It looks like a great summer line up so stay tuned!

A new WWII exhibit will be opening May 15th here in the Heritage Museum. Artifacts are coming in daily. There are spectacular personel affects as well as rare rifles and other wartime articles. Rifles representing each of the involved countries are in pristine condition dispite their age, several quite rare collector specimens.

Included in one of the treasure boxes we discovered rare items given to Japanese soldiers by family members to ward off evil spirits and wish them good luck, fans & good luch belts signed by family members and friends. There is a rare SS field flag as well as one small cap pin worn by one of the first SS radio troops to enter Paris, still on the original field cap.

Doing the research on these pieces as they come in has been quite a learning experience for all of us here in the Museum. We hope you will enjoy the display as much as we are having putting it together.

For all interested in our Volunteer program, Volunteer pre-season meeting scheduled for Friday eve. 5:30 PM April 30th. If you are interested in the Ironstone Volunteer Program, this meeting is a must do. Get the scoop. Its a lot of work, but, a great team of Volunteers to work with.

The 2010 Concours d'Elegance, held September 25th. is opening the event to artists for 2010. If you are a painter interested in painting on site during this spectacular classic car show, contact Chris Gomez at cgomez@ironstonevineyards.com. The exposure is tremendous and the autos even more so. Great opportunity to paint those exotics rarely seen out and about. If you haven't seen the Benitoite display, better hurry! It will be leaving us towards the end of April. Owner Brett Keller will be entering this exhibit at the National Gem & Mineral Show in Las Vegas later this summer.

Incoming! May 15th is our deadline to have up and running our summer special exhibit, WWII. The focus of the exhibit is still pending the final details of what will be coming in. To date, I have notification that we will have helmets from each of the participating countries, a rare SS Waffen field flag & cap with a rare Paris pin. There will be around 4 - 6 original rifles from various armies along with a SS dress dagger. And so much more! I hope to obtain photos of some of the pieces prior to the exhibit. So, stay tuned in case I get early access.

The Ironstone Main Galleria will see various one person exhibits this summer. As soon as all artists are finalized, the schedule will be posted here. In the meantime, ever changing bios of the 2010 Spring Art Show artists will be located at the lower part of this blog. Keep checking for updates.

Can't believe how a lost in action camera can totally throw one off kelter! Twitter has suffered and our poor blog came to a horrifying standstill! How can a digital camera cause speechlessness? And this is someone who owned the "first camera" within the last 10 years. Mind you, the past was recorded with pen and sketchbooks, but, those don't upload as quickly or efficiently. But, thanks to the saving grace of Carolyn! We are back on board, back in line and ready to go.

Did you notice the Mark Twain Quotes on the bottom of the blog? You should. Here is one man that should be listened to. 2010 marks Mark Twains 175th birth anniversary AND his 100th death anniversary. A year to listen and celebrate one of our great American writters and humorists. The Calaveras County Jumping Frog Jubilee has taken up our great fellow as the Theme for this years Fair, Mark Twain's Wit & Wisdom, for he excelled at both! We actually have the book, "Mark Twain: his words, wit and wisdom" here in the Museum for sale. I took it home to browse through. There are over 1,800 quotes. He is funny, full of satire and you can probably find one of his quotes that will totally insult you.

If you haven't been out to the winery lately, you had better hurry if you want to see the brilliant colors of spring! If Mother Nature keeps it warm too long, the incredable barrels of tulips will rise, explode their colors and fall to the ground, soon! Ironstone Vineyards is proud to announce that judging for the 13th Annual Spring Obsession Art Show was completed by Oakland Museum's Chief Curator of Art, Phil Linhares and Crocker Art Gallery's Director & Chief Curator, Scott Shields. Both Phil and Scott joined artists, buyers, gallery owners and art lovers at the Artist Reception, Saturday, March 6th at Ironstone Vineyards for a memorable evening of fantastic food and wine pairings presented by Executive Chef James Lehman, piano entertainment by David Swart and a wonderful introduction by Ironstone Owners, John & Gail Kautz.
Scott Shields
Crocker Art Museum Chief Curator Scott A. Shields holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in art history from the University of Kansas. He has 12 years of professional experience in museums in the Midwest and San Francisco Bay Area and has curated numerous exhibitions and written articles for various scholarly journals. He was one of the contributing authors to a book on artist Percy Gray, published by the Carmel Art Association, and developed catalogues for various exhibitions including The Pilot Hill Collection of Contemporary Art and San Francsico and the Second Wave: The Blair Collection of Bay Area Abstract Expressionism. A major text authored by Shields, Artists at Continent’s End: The Monterey Peninsula Art Colony, 1875-1907, will be released by The University of California Press in early 2006 in conjunction with a statewide traveling exhibition. He is also one of three primary authors of a forthcoming exhibition catalogue entitled Dark Metropolis: Irving Norman’s Social Surrealism, published by Heyday Books, which will accompany a nationally traveling exhibition that opens at the Crocker Art Museum in fall 2006.

Philip E. Linhares

Philip earned his Master of Fine Arts Degree from the California College of Arts & Crafts located in Oakland, followed by a degree in Museum Management Instititute, at UC Berkeley in 1988. Mr. Linhares has broad experience in developement of Art before his current position at the Oakland Museum: Director of Exhibitions, San Franiciso Art Institute, 1967-1977, Director, Mills College Art Gallery, 1978-1989, Director, Graduate Program, California College of Arts and Crafts, 1980-1988. Philip's assumed his current position as Chief Curator of Art at the Oakland Museum of California in 1990. Philip is actively working on a major building, renovation and collection re-installation program at the Oakland Museum, scheduled for reopening on May 1, 2010.

Open Division Spring Obsession Art Show & Competition

With over 258 paintings submitted for consideration in Ironstone's 13th Annual Spring Obsession Art Show, this years panels had a very difficult time!
But, the job has been done, artists have been notified and the show will Open March 6th with a great Food & Wine Pairing Reception from 4 - 6. Unveiling of the 2010 Spring Obsession Poster will take place at 5:00 PM along with announcements of the Open Division Winners. This years Open Division Judge is Scott Shields, Art Director and Curator of the Crocker Galleries in Sacramento. Scott will be available at the reception for questions and observations. The reception is open to the public for an entry fee of $20. Come meet the artists, enjoy Chef James spectacular spread of fun food and wine pairings and take your time enjoying the fantastic 13th Annual Spring Obsession Show!

President's Weekend at Ironstone

Dahlynn & Ken McKowen, co-authors of the new "Wine-Oh! Guide to California's Sierra Wine region" were here Saturday to sign copies of the great book as well as participate in a fun and very entertaining cooking demo with our very own Chef James. Chef James has the ability to not only entertain and educate the audience, but make them feel very much a part of what he is doing. Without missing a step, Chef James was able to make fresh pasta dough, brown meat, knead the dough, mix the sauce, cut the dough into a nice flat pasta, and put it all together with hands and flour flying everywhere. Tasting his masterpiece was the icing on the cake, so to speak. This all took no time at all! Check out the slide show to the right...

Meanwhile up in the tasting room, Carla tasted guests from a barrel of 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon. Even though still not quite ready, this wine is showing very well. All around thumbs up from guests.

Just outside, Garden King Larry placed a few daffodils at the BBQ table. Great Ribs, Yummy!

Warehouse sale downstairs was hopp'n all day! Incredable deals on some great wines. Stock up time with cases flying out the door. The Ironstone Team was having a great time with our regulars who come out for every sale. Lots of new guests with all the wineries offering specials for CWA glass holders. With the sun shinning and lots of people, we had a great time at Ironstone this weekend. We are gearing up for a wild March! Ironstone's 13th Annual Spring Obsession Art Show, Competition & Sale is looking to be one of the best exhibits on record. Open Division entries are arriving daily from throughout the United States. Theme Division Accepted Originals are arriving this weekend. Excited is not a powerful enough term to describe how I feel!

As curator of this exhibit for the past 12 years, I am especially thrilled about this years show. With so many new artists and mediums. It is looking to me that the entries being submitted are across the board, from steel wall hangings, traditional paintings to fiber art. And those are just the pieces already in. With the February 5th deadline, who knows what else will come in.

It is such a thrill opening each entry to see the images submitted. We have seen this exhibit grow from a local art show to a National show over the past 12 years. Each year the quality grows as does the participation.

Murphys was a perfect location to start an exhibit like this. After moving back home to this area over 20 years ago, I discovered an amazing abundance of artists living and working in this beautiful place a lot of us can call home. Some hiding out in the hills while their works were being sold in San Francisco, New York and Coastal galleries. Others determined to bring their art to the residents, organizations and communities here locally. As Murphys and Calaveras County grew, so did the awareness of these great artistic assets.

Ironstone's Spring Obsession Art Show not only provides a venue for this talent, but brings an entirely new element. Opening the exhibit to a National level brings to our area some of the top talent of our country.

Now, lets take this to an even higher level. Wine & Food Pairing! The March 6th reception for the artists is actually a spectacular food and wine pairing event. Executive Chef James creates tasting stations where a special food is paired with select variatals of Ironstone wine. The station staff explain why each pairing was selected. Educational if you prefer or just have fun.

Always accompanied by live music, artists, buyers, gallery owners and art lovers get to browse the art, meet new friends and learn why artists do what they do and how. It is such a fun evening! The Theme Division winner is unveiled by Ironstone Family Vineyard owners, John and Gail Kautz with the introduction of the 2010 Ironstone Spring Obsession Poster. President, Stephen Kautz presents the prizes to the Open Division Winners.

This great exhibit officially opens Saturday, March 6th. & Sunday March 7th. The Heritage Building plays host to artists in action as well as artists who have set up booths to display more of their works and artistic endeavors. The exhibit runs through Mother's Day weekend, which gives the art work maximum exposure to the broadest range of potential buyers and art lovers.

Benitoite Gem Display

Collector Brett Keller works on his display of Benitoite for Ironstone's Heritage Museum. Scheduled to be on display through March 7th., this collection of rare and unique Benitoite gems and crystalls is beautiful. The rich blue hues found in these formations are breath taking.

Brett has won numerous awards with this display and has qualified for the National Show later this year. He hopes to take home another prize for this beautiful collection.

Come see it and cheer Brett on. If you aren't sure what Benitoite is, lets start with the "official Gemstone of California". And what a more appropriate place for this display than next to the "official Mineral of California"... GOLD! and the 44tlb specimen!

Gem quality Benitoite is found in only one mine in the world approximately 20 miles north of Colinga, CA. in an area now called the Clear Creek Recreational Area. It was first discovered here in 1907 by James Marshall Couch. These first blue crystals were thought to be Sapphire or Spinel, but their softness, with a Mohs hardness of only 6.5 made them much too soft for either of those stones. It was University of California at Berkeley Professor George Louderbach who first identified this gem as a new mineral and named it Benitoite due to its origin in the headwaters of the San Benito River.

Considered one of the ten rarest gemstones in the world, Benitoite is enormously popular among mineral collectors for its beauty and rarity. With the mine now closed and mosted played out, this collection is even more rare and most certainly worth a visit to see for yourself. Slide show coming soon.

As Seen on TV! The release of Daniel D'Agostini & Molly Chappellet's new coffee table book, "Into the Earth: A Wine Cave Renaissance". This book is a must see. My first reaction was "Wow!" This is one big and beautiful book. If you can get past the stunning photography, you realize this book is a history of the develpment of the great aging caves of the wine industry. This is also a very heartfelt and special project for Daniel D'Agostini. Daniel is credited with taking most of the spectacular photos in this rather large book. The Kautz Family of Ironstone Vineyards and the D'Agostini family have a great bond tied to the rich history of California's gold rush. D'Agostini winery is credited with being one of the first commercial wineries developed during the actual gold rush. During the days, wine was fermented in large redwood barrels. Along comes Mr. John Kautz building a tribute to the Mining Era with Ironstone Vineyards to procure several of those antique barrels and put them to use as the entry doors to Ironstone Vineyards very own aging caverns as well as the paneling in the spectacular tasting room.

These in themselves are a must see, but, back to the book. We have the book for sale here in the Heritage Museum at Ironstone. Don't take my word for it, come see for yourself, it is a beautiful history of a significant development in California's wine industry and a must have for all you wine lovers.

OK, we have this great collection of Rock & Mineral Specimens just in. Been talking about to everyone we run into! Excited doesn't do the collection justice. You have to come in to see it to believe it. And we are not even in the rock business officially other than of course gold specimens... so this is pretty exciting to us.

For fun, one of our followers suggested we keep something special aside for our blog followers only. Great idea. Gives us a chance to see how many of you are actually following us as well as giving our followers a special thank you.

We have pulled aside several specimens that we will keep in the back room just for you. Just let us know you are one of our blog followers and we will pull the special stuff out. This offer is also being spread on our twitter account. All specimens are available on a first come, first serve basis and limited to stock on hand.

Some of these pieces are especially beautiful for possible jewelry making as well as collection pieces. The photos below are of some of the natural copper specimens. They sell for only $2.00 each and are beautifully intricate and lacy looking. One pair have already gone out for a pair of earrings. Lets see what you can do!

Rocks & Rock'n @ Ironstone Museum

Just in! A fantastic collection of specimen rocks and minerals. We are still going through the boxes and discovering one treasure after another. It's like Christmas in here. OK, I said the "word" before our other sacred holiday, Thanksgiving, so that's a few dozen cookies I have to bake ... but, it really is! Check out the photo and the mountain of boxes.

These new specimens are going up for sale this weekend here in the Museum. With prices ranging from $1.00 to $250.00 there is bound to be a treasure for you novice collectors as well as our seasoned rock hound friends out there.

This process is taking longer than usual, but we are finding that each specimen requires extended ooo's and ahhhh's as well as delving into the "Encyclopedia of Rocks, Minerals and Gemstones" for much needed information and enlightenment.

Such beauty sends my mind wondering... I don't ever remember seeing such beautiful specimens when expected to learn about minerals in high school. If these had been presented as part of the learning process, I honestly believe it could have changed the direction of part of my life interests.

How lucky are the students here in Calaveras County! They have the wonderful Russ and Pam Shoemaker at the Stories in Stones Learning Center downtown Angels Camp. Here, students young and old can learn hands on about how the earth was formed and how these unique specimens fit into the science of Mother Earth.

Jason Mraz Concert warming up. Waiting for a chillin evening coming down from a sm0ky, 100 degree day. Band is warming up while the lines are starting to grow. The Jason Mraz Merchandise tent was setting up this afternoon with early day customers already. Looking forward to a fun sing along evening here at Ironstone. Glad to have Jason back with us, this time as the headliner. He deserves it!
