Meet Artist Neila Stewart

Neila Stewart

T-013  transparent-daffodils by Neila Stewart wc 15x15 $400

I’ve been an  amateur artist since I was 4, initially working with Crayola and branching out at 9 to incorporate Prismacolor pencils, collage, and Mod Podge into my pieces.

Watercolor and pen & ink illustration have been my preferred vices for the past 30 years. After spending a month in Yosemite in 2009, I developed a fondness for painting big rocks using an east-west style, akin to Chiura Obata. But I’m willing to paint and draw anything and do so daily.

During the day, I am a mild-mannered graphic designer for a high-tech firm in Santa Rosa, California. At night, I put on my Salvador Dali beret and mustache and engage in art.

I have mostly lived in Santa Rosa but was born in Hawaii and spent significant time in Chicago Illinois where I obtained a masters in Urban Planning. I also have an Environmental Science degree from UC Berkeley, I’ve taken many college-level art classes but my greatest art influences came from my high school art teacher, Mr. Gadberry, from whom I learned discipline and drawing skills, from artist Popi Tyler who taught me painting skills, and from my mother who taught me how to draw a little girl.

Find your gift and share it with the world.

I thought that was good advice from her mother and I plan on following through.

T-002 Daffodils in Rust by Judy Day  wc 16x23 $175.00

January 25, 2021

I attended Art Center School of Design and CSUN and have a BA in Graphic Design and a teaching credential in Art Education. I taught middle school art for over 25 years in Southern California. I’ve worked in all media including animation, sculpture, photography, and illustrated three children’s work books, but watercolor is my passion. I like the way pigments mix on the paper and flow from the tip of the brush. I can play for hours with paper, paint and water. Add some salt and a spray bottle and I’m set for a day or two.

O-031 Happy Aglianico by Judy Day wc 20x27 $325

I moved to the Sierra Foothill Gold Country following my retirement, and began studying with several local artists. I love learning new techniques and using new color combinations. I paint every day from only a few minutes to 8 hours, if I am really inspired.  I paint because I simply love to,

O-030 The Hikers by Judy Day wc 16x20 $250

I am inspired by humm…almost anything and everything. Landscapes or seascapes, anywhere in the world, Norway, Germany, Italy, Greece, or around the corner on China Graveyard, or up on Electra Road. I see a combination of colors, shapes or textures and they reach out and grab me. Sometimes animals do, like the elephants in Shi Lanka or the Koala in Australia, portraits of my grandchildren are always fun. Flowers in my yard or on the road side. Like I said almost anything.

O-029 Lonesome Christmas by Judy Day wc 12x16 $175

Playing with paint or drawing becomes a push or pull between the process of painting or drawing, or the product you can produce. Do I just sit and play or do I want to paint a picture? Sometimes I am having so much fun playing I am surprised a “Painting” is the result.

I like to paint plein air, but that is not always possible, so I have hundreds of photographs of my travels and the nearby areas. I can pull out the photos and there it is my inspiration. I like to paint on 140lb. Or 300lb. Arches cold pressed paper and use Daniel Smith Watercolors.

Please enjoy a piece of my passion.  Judy Day

O-009 sunflowers-by Connie Carson-Romano oil 18x24  $425

I have always found it difficult to write an artist’s statement. The task has remained a challenge to this day even after a lifetime of immersion in the art of communication. It is certainly not for a lack of words. I enjoy language and the bonds that are created by it. It is not my ability to use the written word as I have been published to good reviews. Yet I find myself struggle through a verbal description of why I feel the over powering need to create a visual display what I see and how I see it on a canvass.

While the depths of my need to draw and paint will probably always remain a mystery to me, I believe my difficulty in expressing verbally my attraction to art is simply in the meditation that is involved in the process: The sinking of self into an object or view. Total immersion into the colors, the shapes, the emotions that are present with the seeing. The challenge of putting, not only the object of the painting to canvas, but the expression of the depth of what is presented to my eyes and the way that my brain processes it. And the ability to share my vision with other so they, too, see the incredible blue of the mountains, the depth of the shadows in the flowers, and the blend of yellows and reds in a sunset.

T-004 Trilogy-by Connie Carson-Romano oil 8x10 $175

The diversity of vision by various artists presented in an art show or gallery always amazes me. I find it does not matter if I “like” the work I see or not. It is the vision of another who was driven to put their view to canvas. And I am grateful for the sharing.

I hope you enjoy the show.

O-070 Summer Tiger Lilies by Barbara Hall wc 17x23 $670

O-071 Afternoon Rose by Barbara Hall wc 8x8 $350
As a contemporary painter, I delight in painting that which captures my eye and spirit. My subjects are varied, from landscapes, flowers,  cityscapes, portraits, to imaginative intuitive themes, in watercolor and acrylic. My summer studio, in the northern California mountains, soothes and inspires, with its peaceful quiet of woodlands, forest, meadows, creeks and ponds. I enjoy winter ‘down the hill’ in the foothills, and often take off for the coast north of San Francisco, where I  grew up. Traveling affords me time to reignite excitement and adventure & my watercolor travel journal is always close by.       “When I paint, I smile.”

O-072 Southwest Sun Time by Barbara Hall acrylic 11x14 $370

When painting, my intention is for my artwork to be a reflection of living with an open heart, open mind, and open eyes. A sense of wonder inspires my art, and my hope is that my art touches others in this way.

Meet Artist Vickie Chew

Vickie Chew

T-005 Incipient-Bloom-by Vickie-Chew oil 16x20 $600

Painting for me is a joy, challenge and mental escape all in one. Most of us Artists fall in love with a scene for variety of reasons just as you may fall in love with a particular surrounding or place. I love the challenge of trying to capture the essence of what is before me, whether it be a barn, trees, lakes or ocean. It is all about recreating and capturing the light, character and personality of the scene, nothing else exists when I paint, as I lose myself to the painting “zone.” I began painting over twenty years ago so that I could escape to the zone from work but found my passion in the process. I am mostly self-taught along with many hours spent at workshops, video’s and outings with my favorite mentors.

I do Impressionistic oil paintings in Plein Air, Studio, Murals and Commissioned pieces. I use brush and palette knife and very minimum mediums. My work is always sealed, signed and numbered on the back of the canvas.

Meet Artist Susan King

 Artist Biography: Susan King

T-022  Spiral into Spring by Susan King wc 11x18 $425

Susan King is a 32-year resident of the Murphys and Arnold areas. Now retired from full-time teaching, she has realized this exciting new time to focus on her exploration of the visual arts. The wonder of the natural world, which surrounds the sierra foothills and beyond, is her inspiration.

Susan uses a variety of mediums and techniques to create unique emotional connections within her work. Water color, acrylics, hand-made papers and altered papers are some of the essential components of her pieces. "Every painting is a continual learning experience for me. I'm constantly considering the interaction of composition, design, color and materials. This process is both humbling and exhilarating."

Currently, Susan displays and markets her work at Art on Main in Murphys. She was awarded Ironstone Vineyards annual theme division winner of the Obsession art show for two years, and featured on their vineyard poster each year. In addition, she was accepted into the Yosemite Renaissance show in Yosemite Valley and the traveling show thereafter.

Comminity outreach of th eArts to children of the Vallecito Unified School District and MarkTwain Unified School disctict has included lessons for students K-6. Meet Artist Linda Lawrence

   Linda Lawrence

Always artistic by nature, Linda was constantly drawing as a child, and enjoyed art classes throughout her school years in Soquel and Fresno, California. As an adult, her love of design was explored and expressed through photography, homemade cards, sketches and interior decorating.

O-064 Without a Paddle by Linda Lawrence oil 9x12 $185

Linda and her husband, Ron moved to Murphys in 1992, for its inherent natural beauty and small-town lifestyle. As her children grew more independent, Linda was thrilled to begin taking classes through Columbia Junior College around 2000, and first studied with Hermione Rios.

Linda paints primarily in water-based oils, which she finds to be user-friendly and a bit healthier overall.  Through the years, she has developed a playful, colorful style, and had enjoyed and appreciated the influence of instructors Diana Boyd, Susie Hoffman, Sunny Sorenson, Eva Walker, and Judy Cain through Town Hall Arts in Copperopolis. She has also taken workshops from Murphys renowned plein air artist Kathleen Dunphy, and Colley Whisson of Australia at Coastal Maine Art Workshops in Rockport, Maine.

O-065 Comb and Wattle by Linda Lawrence oil 10x14  $195

Linda often shows her work was at the Calaveras County Arts Council and was accepted to present a painting in their 2017 show, AnimalScapes. She was also invited to show at the Studio 11 Gallery in Oakland, California in 2018, and had her first show at Hovey Winery in early 2020.

Linda is thoroughly enjoying the evolving process of becoming an artist, and the self-expression, freedom, and mindfulness it provides. She considers her fellow artists soulmates and true inspirational treasures.
