Meet Spring Obsession 2024 artist Robin Mooney

 Robin Mooney - Cupertino, California

Nearing the end of a 36-year career as a Civil Engineer and worried about what trouble I might get myself into during my retirement, my wife and sister-in-law conspired. For a birthday, they surprised me with paints, brushes, paper and a week-long watercolor workshop with Dale Laitinen. While I was obviously in way over my head, I greatly enjoyed that workshop. I have returned to Dale's Virginia City workshops to paint and reconnect with friends for most of the last twenty years.

After using up my allotment of classes in furniture design and sculpture at De Anza College, my artistic endeavors now focus on watercolor. I especially enjoy painting with my friends, Ron and Popi Tyler in Santa Rosa.

It was with Popi's 3encouragement and support that I have entered a painting in the theme category for the second time. Each of these entries experimented with the use of gesso to supplement the primary use of watercolors. These paintings are a departure from my usual paintings of landscapes with architectural elements and a Virginia City theme.

Meet Spring Obsession 2024 Artist Michelle Thornburg

 Michelle Thornburg - Artist's Statement

O-087 Mermaid-Dreams-by Michelle Thornburg acrylic 33x27 $800

My style of creating artwork is painting from the subconscious. There are no carefully planned sketches, no grids, it is just me and my paint with no expectations of anything but painting. I use my hands to apply the paint directly onto my canvas, no rules, just whatever feels right. The key for me is to let go of the conscious world around me, and just paint, allowing my hands to take the lead. Eventually the painting reveals itself. It's like daydreaming on a canvas.

Artist's Biography

O-088 Yellowstone-Moon-by Michelle Thornburg acrylic 36x36 $800

Michelle Thornburg is a California Artist and Art Teacher living and working in the Central Valley. She creates dream like paintings from her subconscious using the Surrealist technique of automatism, or automatic painting. Her technique of using mainly her hands to apply acrylic or oil paints to the canvas allow her to connect with her artwork. Her paintings are created by applying paints onto the canvas in various color, patterns, and movements. Her paintings are often reworked and go through many changes before they are completed. These expressive paintings are full of fanciful images and colorful landscapes.

Meet Spring Obsession 2024 artist Janette Jones

 Janette Jones

O-012 Gray Day Blues by Janette Jones oil 12x12 $395

The comments heard most often about her paintings are "they make me feel joyful", "lift my spirits", and "they are filled with a sense of light and lightness". As an artist who is constantly looking for the beauty of light in every subject, this is music to her ears. As a person who is wildly optimistic about life and positive about the future, she is thrilled her paintings reflect this "joie de vivre" attitude and bring joy to her collector. Janette uses a strong sense of design, personal color mixes and an intimate point of view to create her distinct style.
