Featured vehicle marques vary from year to year—such names as Packard, Duesenberg, Pierce-Arrow, BMW, Corvette, Studebaker, Bentley and Rolls-Royce. Special classes spotlight early Fords, streamlined cars, sports cars, exotics, race cars, coachbuilt luxury marques plus significant unrestored and original automobiles.
The Ironstone Concours d'Elegance weekend begins with a Friday evening Cars & Stars wine tasting, dinner and auction. The concours itself takes place on Saturday, climaxed by an awards ceremony. Class winners drive onto the Ironstone Amphitheatre stage to receive their trophies. Among regular participants are Reno’s National Auto Museum, the California Automotive Museum in Sacramento, the Blackhawk Museum in Dublin and San Francisco’s Academy of Art University auto collection.
Proceeds from the Ironstone Concours d’Elegance benefit Central and Northern California youth in agriculture, notably Future Farmers of America (FFA) and 4-H. In addition, the non-profit Ironstone Foundation has helped fund the California State FFA headquarters in Galt CAlifornia; scholarships in partnership with the California State Fair; and the Calaveras County Fair scholarship program.

We're Back!
We are back online after a much too long absence. Life became a bit overwhelming with too much external stuff going on, so we had to take a break. Sometimes you just have to do what you have to do...
Ironstone is excited to announce we are in the process of planning our 25th Anniversary Spring Obsession Art Show & Competition! That being said, plans are underway for a big bang this next year.
This past year, due to events beyond our control, we were forced to eliminate the Opening Celebration of this exhibit and create a wonderful though soft closing event. This turned out to be a wonderful success for all our participating artists. So much so that we have decided to move forward with a great closing event again this year to celebrate. The weekend selected is June 11 & 12, when we should be out of the rainy season with more stable weather. Mark you calendars!
And stay tuned for more details as they come up!

Congratulations to Linda for the sale of her piece, "Without a Paddle". This precious little oil painting has found a new home in Arnold. Linda has more paintings still available at Ironstone Vineyards now through May 23. Come on by and take a look.

Drywasher?
Drywasher
A drywasher is a common desert mining tool for gold mining. It is much like a highbanker, since it uses a motor and a form of sluice, but it has no need for water.
The drywasher operates by the use of air. By forcing air to flow up through the material as it moves down the sluice, the heavier materials, like gold, will stay at the bottom and get trapped by the riffles while the lighter materials will flow up and over the riffles or be blown away. The lighter material that is not blown away will slowly flow down the sluice and fall out the end of the sluice.
e
Ironstone's Heritage Museum is home to a very old and rustic drywasher. This unit made of wood and canvas hales from the early 1900's. Our guess here is the air was passed through via bellows and a strong arm.
Modern drywashers, hooked up to pumps are made of stainless steel and require minimal effort on the prospectors part.

SOLD! Red & Blue Birds Against Striped Sky, by Sandra Campbell
This past weekend saw another great painting off to a new home. Sandra Campbell's delightful little collage, Red & Blue Birds Against Striped Sky, is a careful overlaying of colors that create a depth of field that contrast to the simplicity of the birds. Although not a large piece, it carries a huge impact of imagery and imagination. Time to make a visit to see the rest of the show before they also find new homes! Open Thursday through Sunday, 11:00 am - 4:00 pm.

My style of creating artwork is painting from the subconscious. There are no carefully planned sketches, no grids, it is just me and my paint with no expectations of anything but painting. I use my hands to apply the paint directly onto my canvas, no rules, just whatever feels right. The key for me is to let go of the conscious world around me, and just paint, allowing my hands to take the lead. Eventually the painting reveals itself. It's like daydreaming on a canvas.

Michelle Thornburg is a California Artist and Art Teacher living and working in the Central Valley. Her technique of using mainly her hands to apply acrylic or oil paint to the canvas allow her to connect with her artwork. Her paintings are created by applying paints onto the canvas in various colors, patterns, and movements. Her paintings are often reworked and go through many changes before they are completed. These expressive paintings are full of fanciful images and colorful landscapes.

I began doing art at an early age while in grade school. I can remember spending hours in my room drawing, copying other artist’s work. I studied it formally in High School and college but abandoned it to pursue a career in Occupational Therapy and to raise my 2 girls. At some point in my adulthood I mentioned to my husband that I would like to start painting again and that year, for my birthday, he bought me an easel, paints and paint brushes. There was no turning back now! I needed to refresh my skills so I enrolled in an art class through Columbia College taught by Gereon Rios. I was hooked!

I stepped into the world of art seven years ago when I took my first photography class. Taking photos opened my eyes in a new, inquisitive and expansive way to what was around me.
As one thing often leads to another, a photographer friend encouraged me to join Popi Tyler's watercolor class. This was an invitation to learn something new. Her weekly class provided an opportunity to sink into the study and practice of painting while observing my emerging style and expression. Popi has been a wonderful teacher.
When I paint, I open to my evolving creative process, and I love how it offers an element of surprise between intention and what is finally captured on paper. As I was drawn to the abstract in photography, I also enjoy combining realism and abstract in my paintings.
My home is in Sebastopol, California, where my husband and I raised our family and continue to reside.
