Meet Artist Joy Willow

Joy Willow's "abstract naturalist" style combines the love of organic line and texture with images inspired from nature. Working on canvas, panel and on print-making paper, she aims to create a feeling of spontaneity and space while implying an internal landscape. Her panels afford a build-up of textures that suggest earth and rock forms. Her works on paper often begin with linear expressive gestures which are then "processed" in a way that adds and subtracts as the painting reveals itself.

Several techniques are evident in the work on canvas and panel, such as underpaintings "which provides a subtle background), mono printing, collage, found objects, glazing, and the use of sponges, brushes, rags, brayers, and fingers. The canvas become a field of discovery in which totally unplanned surprises are revealed.

Joy has been exploring the visual arts for over 30 years. She is also a trained musician and has taught voice and piano for over 40 years, maintaining an active studio in her home in Sonora. The quiet language of painting provides and wonderful balance and counterpoint to the verbal expression of song and poetry. Painting and poetry are really not very different for her, each voice whispering its invitation like woven lines of music. Her published collections of poetry are available locally and on Amazon.

Born and raised in eastern Pennsylvania, Willow was happily making abstract markings with finger paints until the coloring book with its strict lines stopped her joyfully messy experimentation. It took several decades to recover her desire to make art; long solitary walks allowed her to unconsciously absorb nature's patterns, forms, and textures; thus her inspiration for painting re-emerged. Encouraged by the late Judith Hale of Mendocino and Judy Sohigian of New Mexico, both mentors led her to explore the mysterious connections of inner and outer worlds.

Her work has been exhibited in galleries and private collections through out northern California, including Sonoma and Marin counties, San Francisco, Sacramento, Cambria, Lake Tahoe and the Motherlode area where her work has been shown in Sonora's former Ventana Gallery and Murphy's Handmade Gallery; currently her work can be viewed at Aloft Gallery in downtown Sonora.

Her formal schooling includes graduation with an AA degree in Fine Art from Palm Beach Junior College in Lake Worth (1970) and a BA degree in Design (Interior Design, College of Architecture) from University of Florida in Gainesville (1973).

I always painted and did other Artisti things while growing up. Things went on hold for a time during child rearing. Later, I took classes in Oil Painting and Pottery at Delta College in Stockton, CA.

Since my retirement from retail, I have more time and am back to painting and mix media Art. I get a lot of my inspiration from looking at Art Galleries and while traveling.

I often have dreams about my next project and can hardly wait to see what happens when implimented. Sometimes I feel they turn out good, and sometimes not. But, I am still doing what I love to do ... ART!

Art is something I love to create and experience.

My childhood memories are of the times when I spent many hours reading beautifully illustrated fairy tale books. This consistent activity resulted in drawing my own illustrations for home work assignments, especially for history classes.

I enjoy drawing with graphite. It has a certain poetic power that I adore so clearly. In my highly detailed drawings I thrive to present the real persona, the character of the subject at that moment when I felt to freeze it in time.

In my other artworks where I use color, I like to use the medium that I think fits the best to express what I see.

My favorite medium is graphite and oil, but I also work with pastel and color pencil.

    Cali Roberson grew up outside of Oakdale, California where her parents raised horses and sheep. Her dad worked for a large ranch and Cali spent a lot of time working with him, learning how to handle horses and cattle. Her artistic tendencies were apparent early on and the local butcher shop would put her finger paintings in the window.

    At age 11 she began spending summers living with cutting and cow horse trainers Carl and kathy Gould. Cali moved with them to Napa, going into home schooling and training her own horses and working for local ranches during shipping and branding seasons.

    After taking drawing and art classes in high school, Cali realized how passionate she was but still wasn't sure about making a career of it. In order to live at home and continue her other passion, showing cow horses, she went to her local college, CSU Stanislaus. While there, Cali majored in Art and also received a minor in Business Administration.

    After years of trying to work a full-time job, train her horses, and draw, Cali decided to make a change. She quit her office job in 2009 to be a full-time artist. She is married and raising two little girls on their small ranch in Escalon, California. She continues to train and show her own horses and works part time for a large cattle ranch. Cali feels this first hand knowledge of her subject matter is essential to the authenticity of her art.

A native Californian, Susan Regert grew up on a small ranch close to the city of Merced. She raised her two sons at the same location. For fifteen years she raised a flock of Suffolk sheep with the help of her boys. "That was the best time of my life" the artist states. The sudden death of her father plunged her in a whole new life experience as she took over the family cattle operation. It was an intense operation with 1200 head of cattle and a feedlot during the summer months and the cattle in the hills in the winter. During the first two years of learning the business there was no time to paint. The hours spent horseback and working cattle were used to mentally gather information and subject matter to transpose into watercolors.

In 1986 she opened the Regert Gallery, "It was wonderful to have a special place to work and display my paintings. I prefer to work Plein Air or paint on location but ny studio was great when the weather was bad. Painting is my escape from pressure. I can truly lose myself in my work." Susan has shown her artworks throughout California and has won numerous awards. Her watercolors hand in several banks and in many corporate and private collections. One major firm owns forty0five of her paintings. Two of her paintings were featured on the cover of national magazines and two were commissioned by Wallco Land and Cattle of Australia for their corporate offices.

In 1996 she started Z Garden Party. I designed and manufactured metal garden sculptures. I had permanent show rooms in Atlanta and Dallas plus doing shows across the US> I had never traveled much so this was exciting. The shop for eh metal work was at the ranch with the cattle so I could keep an eye on everything. It was a very challenging and busy time but my two sons worked with me through it all.

I closed my gallery in 2019 after 33 years in business and moved to Truckee with my new husband. The mountains, rivers and snow were a great inspiration for paintings and Covid gave me lots of time to paint. The sudden death of my husband in 2021 has sent me back to Merced and my family. I am truly grateful to be able to paint. It has blessed me through the good as well as the difficult times of my life. My business would never have succeeded without the help of my family and friends and support of my customers. I am grateful to all of them.

Meet Artist Ricardo Ernesto

 My full name is Ricardo Ernesto Martinez Estrada. I keep my first two names which I use as my stage name which is Ricardo Ernesto. I was born and raised in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, one of the most violent cities in Mexico. I was born on March 1, year 2000. I am the youngest of 3 brothers who are twins. My interest in plastic art perhaps began in the period from 4 - 7 years old. I remember 4 approaches to art very clearly, the first I can tell that as any child would draw on the walls of his house, from an early age without knowing it I had many approaches to the type of art that I practice today.

Between the age of 5 there was a friend of my father who made boasts with sheets of paper. I tried to see how he did them and I managed to make one later. From there my interest in origami was born, which was nourished by books. The last approach was with my toys and clay. Dad saw in me that I liked to mold things and instead of playing with the sand, he decided to get me something similar to clay but less expensive. I got very logical shapes. The last approach I had was in the visits to my maternal grandmother's house, who was waiting for me with colored pencils and coloring books. She taught me to color without going out of the line, with discipline and tenderness at the same time. 

I was also very interested in reading and in elementary school I liked to write stories. I had a participation that took me to a second place. I kept drawing like any other child, until suddenly I began to notie more dexterity and inted to reporduce more complicated fugures. There was a time when I had a period of drawing only hands. 

I think that was my academy. I had advice from teachers in high school. At 13 I had my first participation but I did not have any mention on the podium. At the age of 15 entering high school, I was very interested in returning to another participation because I felt that my skills had improved.  I achieved my first realistic work when I was in that period. I had the notions to be a drawing instructor of basic notions. I already made portraits.

At that time I had to walk a stretch to get to my house, I did it in the company of my best friend. I remember that day 3 individuals assaulted us in front of a community center. That day I thought a lot about what had happened to us and I made the decision to open the door to give free workshops in the community center because I thought that my community of children and young people full of dreams and aspirations could not keep getting lost on those kinds of paths. I thought that the people who assaulted us were not that old and if they were, I know that they had once been children.

I was a workshop facilitator for 2 years at the same time I that I had another space in the high school that I was studying. I helped professor Alejandro Ramirez Flores and he guided me to structure a work plan for my classes and his classes. He was promoted to cultural supervisor and left me in charge of the painting and drawing workshop of that institution. 

In 2015 I obtained third place in a drawing and painting contest at the state level, in 2016 and 2017 my participation was absent because the institution could not take the works due to lack of budget. The year 2018 arrives and I come of age. I get a temporary job in a construction site as an assistant and then another night job in a supermarket to leave the first one and cover my expenses. In 2018 I decided to take my participation personally to be sure that on this occasion I would participate, along with the work of 2 of my students. I made a 4 hour trip to the capital city with little money but a lot of will. I remember staying with no money that night. I had nowhere to stay, called a friend from back then, Fernando Caldera. He was the one who helped me finish that adventure and sent me money to stay in a motels and pay for the ticket back to my city once the the works were registered. 

I returned the next day and at night I had to continue my workday. A few months passed and the notified me that I had not only obtained first place at the state level in that contest, but that of more thn 17.000 participants nationwide I had been the first place in my category. 

That earned me a trip to Mexico City and the possibility of exhibiting my work in the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City and more motivation and enthusiasm to continue believing in my ideas ans supporting those of the younger ones.

One of my students obtained second place at the state level in her category as well, so I was more than happy with those achievements. In November 2019 I received the opportunity to be a teacher of painting and drawing in a school for children of all ages where my vocation and experience continued to grow. I continued to collect some achievements and together with my students they also achieved important participations and always being in the first places in the competitions. 

The pandemic of COVID-19 I had to pause my projects and my jobs as a painting and drawing teacher. I decided that even if I leave many things behind I would have other opportunities. On January 11, 2021 I obtained my residency and at the end of May of the same year I moved to Arizona together with my friend Fernando Caldera. We moved to work and teach me how to navigate in a country unknown to me, to continue painting. I have a job in the mornings as a cook, the rest of the time I dedicate to art. I am active in calls and in the process of making my first individual exhibition.

My conceptual discourse as an artist is to portray scenes of interest and scenarios that by themselves take on the character of reflection to achieve a work-spectator dialogue. My current style would define it as an approach to contemporary figurative art, such scenarios are poverty, inequality and insensibility of daily  life which I address in my latest paintings in which I am working, In parallel I also make works that address my perspective on the towns, cities and countries that I am getting to know, through their landscapes and their people.

Deborah Marlene, had 5 students who studied in her Studio, before the Pandemic. Now, relocated to a smaller space, without a separate studio, she spends time teaching herself. In addition to traditional watercolors, Deborah is loving Yupo paper. "There are many nice textures and color blends that I am discovering in using both watercolors and alcohol inks on this plastic coated watercolor paper".

Deborah began her Art Journey at age 11, starting with Acrylics. In High School she began Oil Painting; receiving a commission for a painting of antique Bottles, at 16 year of age. She continued in oils, Yuba College, in 1993-94.

  I'm originally from Eastern Oregon.  My family moved to Lodi in 1961 whereI attended Lodi High School, graduating in 1964.  I then enrolled at Sacramento State College, where I was a Commercial Artmajor.  De Witt Whistler Jayne was my main influence.  He was a renownedcommercial artist, illustrator, and portrait painter with a gift for teaching and aneye for perfection.  "Mr. Lew", he would say, "so much for a nice beginning,but let's have a finish."  I've been striving for that quality ever since.  Another instructor that had a very positive effect on me was Dr. Tarmo Pasto,an eccentric art psychologist and art instructor who taught the "Space FrameConcept",  It was all about space and form.

  After graduating from SSC and getting a teaching credential I was fortunateto get an art teaching job at Elk Grove High School.  I taught there for severalyears, but had an itch to get into construction.  That is where I've been until fiveyears ago, when my wife Glenda, and daughter Melissa, and I moved to Murphys.  One thing that is certain is that art requires a commitment.  I feel that I now have the time and space to finally concentrate on my painting.  Although I havebeen producing some art over the years, it is only now that I can continue tothe next piece without an extended time period between.  Landscapes, townscapes,wildlife, and portraits all interest me.  My goal is to create images that bring theviewers into a space that takes them away, and gives them pause to reflect.

 Viviana Leija-Sysak is a visual artist working the the Bay Area. She holds a Masters in Fine Arts from the University of California in Santa Barbara (UCSB). Viviana has experimented with many materials and techniques, creating a strong body of work in traditional and digital strategies. Her recent artwork emphasizes her passion for drawing, using a mixed-media approach based mostly on watercolors and pastels. Statement:

As a visual artist, I like to explore different mediums to express my ideas. I have worked in photography, video, animation, drawing, oils, acrylics, and lately, I came back to mixed-media and digital illustration. I normallay challenge myself questioning how an idea that I want to represent will look like in another medium, or which title would I give it if it was a book. This helps me clarify the essence of my concepts, and get to my point using the needed structure to open a clean dialog between me and my audience.

The art pieces I'm presenting are part of a larger series called "Games and Toys" where I compose artwork based on a specific item of this nature, adding some characteristics, situations or emotions that describe or mirror a bigger and more realistic world. I also think about the memories that some toys can bring to adults, and how they would look embedded, not in a play area, but in a daily adult life. I try giving each item a "personality" to compose it with a new view and perspective.

Formally trained as a registered nurse, and actively working as an intensive care RN.

Raised by an amazing single mom who was an exceptionally gifted artist, I was told "please do not become an artist, for it is a very difficult way to make a living."

I must say I have not received any formal training in the arts.

I first picked up a paint brush during covid.

I love art and music and can not imagine a world without, they are a true blessing in our lives.

As a nurse I have seen more than I often know how to emotionally process, a tremendous amount of pain and suffering. Times I can not, "un-see."

Picking up a paint brush has given me a way to let out some of the stress and passion I feel in life.

Acrylics have made me feel like I am free to create movement, expression, freedom, arts are a language of the soul.

My only hope is that my work may provide a glimpse of joy in our troubled world.

As an artist who is constantly looking for the beauty of light in every subject, this is music to her ears. As a person who is wildly optimist about life an positive about the future, she is thrilled her paintings reflect this "joie de vivre" attitude and bring joy to her collector. Janette uses a strong sense of design, personal color mixes and an intimate point of view to create her distinct style.

Born in California and majored in art while attending California State University, and studied watercolor for five years with Virginia Jentoft in Davis, Ca.  Her watercolor images were successfully marketed and licensed with Daisy Kingdom, Naturally, Springs Mills and Prints Plus (among others) between 1988-2002. She has been painting outdoors in oils after a workshop in 2003, hooked by the challenge of capturing the truth on canvas.

I am a full-time practicing artist and a member of the Eramboo Artist Environment in the northern suburbs of Sydney since 2019. I am a painter and collector, and a member of the Art Gallery of NSW.

Using acrylic and mixed media, I work mainly with Geometric and Landscape Abstractions as well as creating Social Messaging artworks. I look to re-express both mundane and complex concepts to create images that will have viewers linger, explore and debate.

I am curious, often experimenting with non-traditional materials and methods. Using acrylic and enamel with the latter sometimes in aerosol form. I intertwine pen, ink and pencil where this adds detail, clarity or another layer for viewer speculation I work on canvas, linen, board and different types of paper and usually work on 2 or 3 pieces at the same time.

My work is currently included in Australian private collections in NSW, Victoria and South Australia as well as Murphys, California.

Born 1969 in Albuquerque, New Mexico

He creates inspired art that promote the feeling of intrique and

invites each individual to interpret them as they wish.

An innovator at heart, he allows paint, found objects, and wood grains

to find their own way and become something new by the force of

nature. His inspired concepts are a the root of it all, yet the

haphazard finding along the way are what make the end results so

astounding. Each piece of art has layers that build upon one another.

The use of weather, soil earlhly byproducts and recycled items are

found in each piece he designs. Scott's absurd sense of jumor is not

obvious, but is a subtle detail that plays out with his use of texture, 

Irregular strokes and subject matter.

He is the co-owner of the dhyana Center and currently also makes

wood Gua Sha-a health tool for massage. He believes ar tis a healing modality all of its own.

Meet Artist Virginia Haynes

Having been born and raised in Oakland, California, Virginia was close to Tahoe National Forest, Yosemite National Park and many other State and national parks where she found her love of the outdoors and nature. Early in life, she was influenced by her father's love of art. He was a sculptor, stained glass lamp maker and craftsman. At the age of 11, while her dad taught stained glass classes at the U C Berkeley extension, she would help him setup for class and wander the halls of the Art department smelling the oils from painting classes in session. Although she was always very curious, she didn't try her hand at oil painting until 2009. With her very first brush stroke, she knew she had found her passion! For the next 12 years she focused on learning everything she could about drawing and oil painting. Loving nature as she does, she has found the perfect subject matter to paint all around her. Today, Virginia live near Mt. Diablo where she continually strives to express her love of the outdoo0rs and nature through her oil painting.

Artist Statement:

My whole life, I have tried to treat people the way I would like to be treated. In doing so, I paint in a way that I think will please others. I choose to paint nature in a real and present way and paint with color that pleases the senses. I have been influenced by Sargent, who paints with motion and Ander Zorn, who paints with a limited pallet. Incorporation these styles enables me to express the movement and brilliance of what I see in life.
