Meet Spring Obsession 2024 Artist Jan Atwood Ramey

 Jan Atwood Ramey

2/4/24

T-002 Blue Jar by Janice Ramey pastel 12x15 $650

I live in the beautiful small town of Sutter Creek. Our area is blessed with many talented artists so I have had many wonderful teachers close by including Jeannie Vodden and Sabina Turner.

My first love is portraits but I try to stretch a little bit and do some landscapes of flowers once in a while.

I use both watercolor and pastels and dabble a little in oils and a acrylic, whatever works best for the subject.

I have been drawing and painting most of my life but have had more time after retirement from nursing. I remember drawing faces over and over as a child. My mother was an artist and did some beautiful portraits so I think that is where I developed my interest.

O-014 Nishikigoi by Ron Miranda oil 36x24 $2400

Ron was born in the island of Guam, an unincorporated and organized territory of the United States in Micronesia in the western Pacific Ocean. His parents are of Chamorro and Filipino descent. Ron currently resides in Southern California where he studied art at the California State University, Long Beach, earning a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts degree graduating with honors.

O-015 Dunbar Way by Ron Miranda oil 18x24 $1500

Ron began working as a graphic artist receiving state and national awards and accolades for his work. As a graphic artist, it had set him up on his lifelong journey to find his own unique style and language, to create amazing paintings pulsating with the light and energy that emanates from his heart and soul. Now his focus is as a full-time fine art painter to grow and discovery new visual boundaries.

Most of Ron’s inspirations and influences are from fond memories of Guam; romanticizing visions and memories of the rich tropical vegetation, fauna and some of the amazing color, textures and patterns that channel their way into his paintings. Heightened color is paramount in Ron’s paintings with exaggerated hues to push boundaries and strike a chord with the viewers.

O-016 Covers on Ice by Ron Miranda oil 24x18 $1500

Many of Ron’s works range from realism to abstract. The concepts for his abstract works run deep from his island culture and music. Ron finds incentive for his representational pieces from a collection of images via his personal digital library that he photographed throughout his life.

Very well versed in computer graphics design programs, Ron applies his computer skills to conjure up his painting compositions. He works mainly with oils and sometimes uses acrylic, charcoal, color pencil, gouache and pencil.

Ron hopes his paintings resonate with a broad spectrum of people, engaging the viewer in present time with a modern beauty created through his imagination and life experiences.

Meet Spring Obsession 2024 artist Robin Mooney

 Robin Mooney - Cupertino, California

Nearing the end of a 36-year career as a Civil Engineer and worried about what trouble I might get myself into during my retirement, my wife and sister-in-law conspired. For a birthday, they surprised me with paints, brushes, paper and a week-long watercolor workshop with Dale Laitinen. While I was obviously in way over my head, I greatly enjoyed that workshop. I have returned to Dale's Virginia City workshops to paint and reconnect with friends for most of the last twenty years.

After using up my allotment of classes in furniture design and sculpture at De Anza College, my artistic endeavors now focus on watercolor. I especially enjoy painting with my friends, Ron and Popi Tyler in Santa Rosa.

It was with Popi's 3encouragement and support that I have entered a painting in the theme category for the second time. Each of these entries experimented with the use of gesso to supplement the primary use of watercolors. These paintings are a departure from my usual paintings of landscapes with architectural elements and a Virginia City theme.

Meet Spring Obsession 2024 Artist Michelle Thornburg

 Michelle Thornburg - Artist's Statement

O-087 Mermaid-Dreams-by Michelle Thornburg acrylic 33x27 $800

My style of creating artwork is painting from the subconscious. There are no carefully planned sketches, no grids, it is just me and my paint with no expectations of anything but painting. I use my hands to apply the paint directly onto my canvas, no rules, just whatever feels right. The key for me is to let go of the conscious world around me, and just paint, allowing my hands to take the lead. Eventually the painting reveals itself. It's like daydreaming on a canvas.

Artist's Biography

O-088 Yellowstone-Moon-by Michelle Thornburg acrylic 36x36 $800

Michelle Thornburg is a California Artist and Art Teacher living and working in the Central Valley. She creates dream like paintings from her subconscious using the Surrealist technique of automatism, or automatic painting. Her technique of using mainly her hands to apply acrylic or oil paints to the canvas allow her to connect with her artwork. Her paintings are created by applying paints onto the canvas in various color, patterns, and movements. Her paintings are often reworked and go through many changes before they are completed. These expressive paintings are full of fanciful images and colorful landscapes.

Meet Spring Obsession 2024 artist Janette Jones

 Janette Jones

O-012 Gray Day Blues by Janette Jones oil 12x12 $395

The comments heard most often about her paintings are "they make me feel joyful", "lift my spirits", and "they are filled with a sense of light and lightness". As an artist who is constantly looking for the beauty of light in every subject, this is music to her ears. As a person who is wildly optimistic about life and positive about the future, she is thrilled her paintings reflect this "joie de vivre" attitude and bring joy to her collector. Janette uses a strong sense of design, personal color mixes and an intimate point of view to create her distinct style.

 Lucinda Johnson              https://lucindajohnson.com

O-070 Secret-Places-on-the-Pacific by Lucinda Johnson oil 6x6 $225 FAMILY MERIT AWARD

Lucinda is an award-winning, California-native artist (born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area). Art has always been at the center of Lucinda's life. "As a child I enjoyed drawing from nature to become familiar with graceful lines, form and space. I am also very conscious of composition, shapes, lighting, and values from my photography education" she says. Through self-taught studies and workshops with professional artists in a wide array of mediums, art has always been a way for me to share California's unique personality and vistas. Lucinda began experimenting with oils in 2020 and shared "I approach an oil painting with a similar thought process to painting with soft pastels." When painting a landscape on canvas she first primes the canvas with warm undertones. Additional layers are next added dark-to-light. Using a palette knife she first mixes the correct values on the palette, and then proceeds to paint/blend colors on the canvas (wet-on-wet) or layer glaze with brushes.

Meet Spring Obsession 2024 Artist Vaughn Lew

 Vaughn Lew

O-097 Buttermilk Dawn by Vaughn Lew pastel 12x21 $615

I have been drawing for as long as I can remember. Art isn't something I was int5roduced to it was something I did. We lived on a cattle ranch when I was young and that outdoorsy life has been a big influence on my art.

O-098 Jawbone Dream by Vaughn Lew oil 18x24 $615

My art education was pretty low key until college.
Sacramento State exposed me to DeWitt, Whistler, Jayne and Dr. Tarmo Pasto - They had a lot to say.

Mr. Jayne was a "Who's Who in American Art" artist and Dr. Pasto was an early pioneer of art psychology. He lived for form and space.

After college I taught art and humanities at Elk Grove High School. If you really want to "know" art, teach it. I can honestly say that was the toughest job I ever had. The questions never stop and energy is always high. I taught five years at Elk Grove with some adult education in several places but ended up in construction. Art production was low then, but I was always leaning to art.

We moved to Murphys in 2008, built a home and discovered Ironstone Winery, and the art show that changed everything. The support has been great, and I have always enjoyed participating in the show. I have wone several family merit awards, a second place, and had my pastel accepted for the poster.

I have also entered and won awards at he Carnegie in Turlock and the Mistlin Gallery.

My mediums are primarily oil and pastel with an occasional Prisma color.
